Reason #265 to Stop Consuming Trans-fats: Breast Cancer

I’m glad that science has advanced as much as it has in the last 50 years or so. Did you know that trans-fats were actually considered healthy at one time? That’s correct- they were invented as a “healthy” alternative to lard and other such things. As a side note — any food that must be ‘invented’ probably isn’t that healthy for you…

What’s the big deal about lard anyway? I knew a guy whose grandfather used to eat bacon sandwiches slathered with lard for breakfast almost every day. His grandfather lived into his 80s. So lard can’t be all that bad, can it?

Anyway, a study conducted by the University of Paris-South studied blood samples collected between 1995-98, before we knew just how bad trans-fatty acids really were.

They studied 363 women with breast cancer and compared their blood levels of fatty acids to women without cancer. The researchers found that higher levels of fatty acids increased the likelihood that a woman would have breast cancer.

Surprisingly, women with higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly thought to help fight cancer (among other diseases), were NOT any less likely to have breast cancer. In other words, there was no statistical difference between normal fats and omega-3 fats in reducing the risk of breast cancer.
