Deepak Gupta over at the Consumer Law and Policy blog provides his own take on what’s going on in the New York City restaurant scene right now. He anticipates that more cities and maybe even counties will follow New York City’s lead and require restaurants that meet a certain standard (in New York’s proposal, it’s restaurants with 15 or more locations). Furthermore, restaurants can not use a preemption excuse for not complying, as the courts already struck down that argument. It’s only a matter of time now before the restaurant industry as a whole begins providing this information and facing the consequences. Diners are likely to be shocked how many calories they are actually consuming when they eat at their local chain restaurant.
