I’m glad that Longhorn Steakhouse replied with at least some information. They could have easily just ignored my request altogether or waited until they had complete information available. This shows me that are making an effort to address the nutritional value of their menu items.

On another note, I’ve eaten at both Longhorn Steakhouse and Outback. I seem to have a better experience at Longhorn. Tastier food, better atmosphere, more kid-friendly environment. I remember once at Outback, we had to listen to “My Humps” or something like that while munching on a steak. Not really what I’d expect from a steakhouse… especially when dining with my family.

The atmosphere at LH may be better, but I do not agree that they are making an effort to provide nutritional information. I contacted LH in October of 2000 and requested nutritional information. This was their reply:

    Dear Jeremy,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us! Unfortunately, we do not have nutritional information available at this time but we are budgeting an analysis to be conducted next year! Your name will be kept on file to receive this important information as soon as it is available. We really wish we had the answers for you right now, and we appreciate your patience during the interim.

    Most sincerely,

    Martha Shoemaker
    Webmaster

It is now 7 years later and they still don’t have the info. This does not sound like commitment to me.

I inquired again in 2005 and got the following reply:

Thank you for taking the time to write to us and for your interest in LongHorn Steakhouse. I’m sorry to say we do not have nutritional information for our menu. Because most of our dishes are prepared to order, we are unable to provide consistent analysis. We hope that when you are visiting one of our establishments, you will feel free to ask for a special request.

    Kind regards,

    Nikki Mechem

This is the dumbest excuse I have ever heard. Every other resteraunt out there prepare to order and take special request. They can put out a nutritional guide for their dishes “as traditionally prepared by LH” so people have a base number to work from if they diecide to special order or make changes that would change the nutritional value of their food.

I believe LH should be boycotted, apparently they are not concered about the obesity issue in this country and they need to make it a priority and apparently they need to be hit where it hurst - the pocket book - in order for them to provide this info.

@Jeremy: Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately, Longhorn’s response seems to be the standard for most of the big restaurant chains. It’s not in their best interest to be forthcoming about nutritional information. If people really knew how little nutritional value was in that loaded baked potato, they’d think twice about ordering it! They’d either not order a side item, or choose a vegetable, which is more expensive to Longhorn Steakhouse in the long run.

Until there is a focused effort to persuade restaurants like Longhorn Steakhouse to provide nutritional information, dining out will remain a nutritional scavenger hunt.

Sorry, I agree with Jeremy. We live in a suddenly health-conscious world. A majority of people are trying to watch what they eat. I have all but “boycotted” LH since joining Weight Watchers b/c I am able to pull up point values at nearly every restaurant except WW. Thanks, Jeremy, for trying to obtain this info for us!!!!

i have never really thought much about the nutritional facts when eating out. But 3 weeks ago we were told our daughter has type 1 diabetes. now our whole life revolves around these facts. we are finding most restaurants dont have a clue or even care. i do understand it would take some work to put a list together. but if these facts have to be on the side of every box we buy shouldnt the restaurants have to give you the same info.?

I just wanted to let people know about my experience at the Longhorn on Gratiot in MI. First I would like to start by saying that the employees at that particular Longhorn are extremely friendly and always a pleasure. I was there last Saturday for dinner. That has been my favorite spot for dinner lately, not just because of the food but also for the great service I get there and the warm atmosphere. I have a favorite server named Susie. She always makes sure we have a great experience there and because of her we do. I had told her where I worked and just talked for a few minutes. I noticed that night that I had lost some $ and wasn’t sure where I lost it. That following Monday Susie called my work and asked me if I lost $ since she had found it after I left she assumed that it could’ve been mine. She was right on with the amount and she mailed to me that day. I couldn’t believe that she took the time to remember where I worked called me and mailed it out. That to me is considered exceptional service. I just wanted to let everyone know that there are honest people out there and that I appreciate her.

Unfortunately, Longhorn Steakhouse doesn’t do much for providing nutrition facts. As far as I know, the situation hasn’t changed since I’ve posted my emails with them.
