McDonald’s Nutrition Information on Happy Meals

I took the kids to McDonald’s a couple of days ago. (I know, I know- a blog about nutrition facts and we go to McDonald’s?!) Now, we don’t go every day, and it’s okay if you show some restraint and don’t eat two Big Macs or something :) But anyway, since I’ve been posting to this blog, I’ve become much more aware of how companies distribute nutrition information.
This time, I noticed that McDonald’s puts nutrition information on the Happy Meal sacks. Granted, this is more for the parents than for the children, but it’s nice to see that McDonald’s cares ;)

While on this same McDonald’s visit, I noticed that nutrition information was also provided on the medium French Fry carton. This chart doesn’t look like the one on the Happy Meal sacks (which doesn’t look like the standard chart, either). The nutrition facts chart on the fry carton used pictures to represent the different attributes of the fries. For example, fat is shown by a ruler or measuring tape! I’ll try to post a scan of the chart shortly.

After seeing that, I’m wondering why more companies don’t use icons to represent the nutritional content of their foods- especially in a multi-cultural society like ours. Maybe other fast food chains do this, but I just don’t know about it. If you know of any that do, please let me know in the comments.

UPDATE: McDonald’s, it seems, is being very proactive about their nutrition facts information. I just noticed that they put nutrition information on the packaging of their nuggets. While their nuggets (or as I like to call them “chicken meat by-products”) are pretty nasty, I’m glad to see them putting nutrition information on the packaging.
